Which guidelines apply?

In general, the same rules apply to unaccompanied minor asylum seekers as to adults. An unaccompanied minor asylum seeker must therefore meet the same criteria as an adult asylum seeker in order to be granted a residence permit as a refugee in Denmark.

The immigration authorities have, however, special guidelines for the processing of asylum cases for unaccompanied minors:

  • The asylum application must be processed as quickly as possible.
  • The child will be appointed a guardian and will have access to legal assistance in more situations than those available to adults.
  • The child will be accommodated in asylum centres specially designed for unaccompanied minors (with extra staff, for example).
